Port Blair is the gateway to the Union territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is connected by air and sea with both the major cities on the eastern coast of mainland India. Portblair was a Primitive city with a few wooden buildings, constructed during the British era. Corbyn’s cove is the only beach situated close to the city. The serenity of the place and the calm sea make it an ideal location for bathing. ‘Chidiya Tapu’, the other beach, is located at a distance of twenty five kilometers from the city.
The most important monument of Port Blair is certainly the cellular jail situated atop Atlanta Point.
Ross Island : As the ship from the Mainland approaches the Port Blair harbour, the old lighthouse is seen standing at the corner of Ross Island like a diehard sentry. Ross Island, the British headquarters before Independence, remained the seat of power and dominated the fate of the Andaman Islands for almost a century till India was liberated from British Imperialism. In course of time, most of the beautiful structures of the Island Collapsed due to lack of maintenance. Ross Island is now in ruins, with the remains of some old structures still on the slopes of the Hillock.
